"La palma sola" is part of a composition of works that Jorge Mayet has been creating for years.

A native of Cuba, memories of the landscapes of his homeland are a fundamental part of his artistic research. By mixing his emotional memories, the feeling of loss and the idealization of what was left behind, the artist creates a kind of reliquary to keep the link with his homeland alive.

In this work, the artist presents his version of the palm tree that appears on the coat of arms of Cuba.

Jorge Mayet

b. 1962, Havana, Cuba | Lives and works between Palma de Mallorca, Spain and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jorge Mayet is a Cuban artist who has lived in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) for many years and recently also in Rio de Janeiro. The distance from his homeland and his memories of the Caribbean landscapes have a strong presence in his work, which consists of paintings, sculptures and installations. He has exhibited his work in renowned galleries and institutions such as the Maison Particulière Centre D'Art (Brussels), the Museu de Art contemporani Es Baluard (Palma de Mallorca), the Museum of Arts and Design (New York), Art Basel Miami, the La Caixa Foundation (Ibiza), and the 5th Havana Biennial (1993). His works are part of important collections such as the Saatchi Gallery (London), the MAD Museum (New York), the Leo Gallery (Shanghai), among others.

The artist studied painting at the San Alexandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, and at the beginning of his career, this was his main means of expression. However, he gradually gave way to sculptures and installations. These are the result of the physical transformation of feelings that the artist retains from his experiences. Physicality that fits in the hands, that can be carried with the individual. The scale of his works is another important aspect: they are miniatures of elements that mix realistic images with the poetry of the artist's imagination.

Another interesting feature of his sculptures is the use of common materials such as copper wire, painted sponges and paper, in order to create a realistic appearance in the sculptures. When we look at them up close, our eyes are so captivated that we want to touch the pieces.

The trees, with their long roots and lush branches, which sometimes flower or not, as well as the land itself, appear as metonyms for the entire landscape. Feathers, often attached to branches, and the bohíos , a typical Cuban peasant's house, also go through the same process.

It was no coincidence that in 2009, Mayet presented the installation "Deseo " at Miami Art Basel. The house, six meters wide, three meters long and five meters high, was placed in the sea, and there, when it collided with the waves, it naturally deconstructed on the last day of the fair. Its strong and easily identifiable image for Cubans who passed by, awakened in them the connection with their homeland.

"Regardless of the medium I use, my work is about the endless need to express moments that have marked my past and influenced my present. Most of my life experiences come from Cuba. And these are the inspirations for my work. My installations are embodiments of my experiences. They remain indefinitely suspended by invisible threads, like those that connect me to my memories and my roots."
