"Series: Continental Lapidary I and II (Obolus and My Mouth is a Tomb)"
The diptych consists of two images: " Óbolo" refers to African artisanal statuary that often uses cowrie shells to serve as eyes in its human figures. In addition to the decorative character attributed to these shells (as seen in the clothing of the Orishas), they are also divinatory and fortune-telling objects used in the cowrie game.
In " My mouth is a tomb", geophagy is linked to the custom of eating earth in some African tribes. In colonial Brazil, this behavioral trait, which was sometimes interpreted as a symbolic gesture, became a suicidal act of materializing a banzo (a term that defines the mortal nostalgia of enslaved blacks, the longing for their homeland), later "controlled" by the use of hideous anti-earth masks.
