Luiza Baldan

Born in 1980, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil | Lives and works between Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Lisbon, Portugal.

Luiza Baldan is a visual artist, researcher, and curator, holding a doctorate and master's degree in Visual Languages ​​from UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from Florida International University. Since the early 2000s, she has developed works based on multisensory observation exercises, during transit or temporary residencies, which unfold into photographs, texts, videos, audios, and collaborative projects. Her research investigates dwelling and the human relationships established between places, histories, and memories, creating images that challenge reality and photographic construction, often marked by the physical absence of people, but laden with traces of their presence.

She has participated in exhibitions at institutions such as MAM Rio, Paço das Artes, Instituto Moreira Salles, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Centro Cultural Maria Antônia, and La Biennale di Venezia, as well as shows in Portugal, France, Germany, and Chile. Among her projects and exhibitions, highlights include "De Ciudad Abierta a Ventanas" (2023), "Terra em tempos: fotografias do Brasil" (2022), "Schlange" (2022), "Estofo" (2017), "Perabé" (2016 and 2015), "Build Up" (2014), and "Índice" (2013). Her work is part of important public and private collections and has been recognized with awards such as the Stipendium-Sonderprogramm (Germany, 2020), Viva Arte! (Rio de Janeiro, 2015), and the XI Marc Ferrez Photography Prize (2010).

She published the books "Como Olhar Junto" (2025), "Derivadores" (with Jonas Arrabal, 2016) and "São Casas" (2012), and developed the project "Monumentalidade como Coletividade" for the publication "O MASP de Lina: 50 anos do edifício na Avenida Paulista" (2018), in addition to being a member of the Photography Collectors Club of MAM-SP (2016). She currently lives between Brazil and Portugal, where she also works as co-manager of the independent space NowHere Lisboa.
