"The 'Skeletons' edition was conceived exclusively for Carbono Galeria. The set of pieces constitutes a kind of visual alphabet, an organization of lines, shapes, and textures. Biography

Ana Mazzei - Carbono Galeria

Anna Mazzei

b. 1979, São Paulo (SP), Brazil | Lives and works in São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Artist Ana Mazzei's work takes literature and theater as its starting point to materialize diverse situations of observation and staging in the form of installations, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and performances. By using the imagery of epic or mythological narratives, her installations suggest a performance in which it is unclear whether the audience is observing or being observed. Mazzei's objects and sculptures are understood in relation to the body and question notions of orientation, positioning, and organization that govern how we relate to space. The artist evokes recurring images from the history of painting, many of them biblical metaphors, but also political symbolism and scientific and philosophical speculations about the universe.

Holding a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP-São Paulo) and a Master's degree in Visual Poetics from UNICAMP-SP, in 2013 she was selected as an artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts - Paris with a scholarship provided by FAAP. In 2011/12 she participated in the Independent Studies Program at the São Paulo School (PIESP) directed by Adriano Pedrosa. She is a founding member of Teatro Facada and has held solo exhibitions in various institutions, such as the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (2018, São Paulo, Brazil), the Almine Rech Gallery (2017, New York - USA), the Fundacion Saludarte (2016, Miami, USA), the Emmanuel Harve Gallery (2016, Paris, France), the Davide Gallo Gallery (2015, Milan, Italy), the São Paulo Cultural Center (2014, São Paulo, Brazil), the Jaqueline Martins Gallery (2014, São Paulo, Brazil), the Zipper Gallery (2012, São Paulo, Brazil) and La Maudite (2013, Paris, France). In 2016, she participated in the "32nd São Paulo Biennial – Living Uncertainty", where she presented the work "Spectacle".
