“The bold use of color is new. My palette has always been very limited to avoid seduction through colors. Now I abuse a huge possibility of strange colors. (…) I have also thought and worked on forms and constructions; more elaborate, more intricate. So that one day I can go back again. Clean up, simplify. My painting is not anthropophagic, it does not seek simulacra, it has no connection with new media, it is not self-referential, it does not seek gender relations and it is not action painting.”

Paulo Whitaker

b. 1958, São Paulo (SP), Brazil | Lives and works in São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Painter and designer, Paulo Whitaker graduated in Artistic Education from the University for the Development of the State of Santa Catarina - Udesc/SC, in 1984.

Among several exhibitions, he participated in the 25th edition of the São Paulo International Biennial in 2002. Between 1991 and 1992, he was a resident artist at Plug In, in Winnipeg, Canada, at E-Werk Freiburg in Germany and in 1999 at The Banff Centre for the Arts, also in Canada. In the same year, he participated in the exhibition "Brazilian Contemporary Art on Paper" at the MAM, in São Paulo and in 2001 he participated in the 3rd MERCOSUR BIENNIAL in Porto Alegre. In 2007, he participated in the Montreal Biennale, in Canada.

In 1993, Paulo Whitaker received the Gunther Prize for Painting from the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, in 1998 at the VI Salão Nacional Victor and the Grand Prize at the Museum of Art of Santa Catarina.

Paulo Whitaker's works are in the collections of important institutions and museums such as: Santa Catarina Art Museum - MASC, São Paulo Museum of Modern Art - MAM/SP, Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, MAC/USP, Museum of Contemporary Art of Paraná - MAC/PR, Museum of Brazilian Art of the Armando Älvares Penteado Foundation - MAB/Faap, Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo, among others.
