Laura Lima is an artist who is interested in social relationships, in how human behavior alters our perception of everyday life, and brings metaphors of behavioral conditioning to her performances and installations.

The work "Sifo" It is made up of various elements and materials attached to two metal hooks. Elements that relate to the body, to human use, and that are part, in a certain way, of human nature. The hammer, for example, relates to manual work, while the cotton and leather bag makes us think about displacements. The " Sifo" can be used as a “garment”, an act proposed in past exhibitions by the artist with other sculptures and objects.

The name of the work differs from edition to edition, as does the work itself. Items are added or removed from the set, just as “sis” is added or removed from the name (Sifo, Sisifo, Sisisifo, etc.). Furthermore, the puzzle created by the artist alludes to a past by being formed by objects that seem to store time. Rustic leather was used for various purposes and served not only as clothing, but also to create bags and purses. Marble, another natural element, forms slowly over the years. Shells, wood, iron, lead, thread (cotton) and paper (plant-based) also store time and existence in nature.

The construction of this work reflects the complexity of the expression of the concept of still life brought by Lima, which involves the idea of a network and the intersection of different “universes”. What connects them here is their presence in nature, or rather, the natural origin of the objects.

Biography

Laura Lima - Carbono Galeria

Laura Lima

b. 1971, Governador Valadares (MG), Brazil | Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil.

Laura Lima is a conceptual artist and her work is fundamentally a “sculpture of human flesh”. Her work “Dopada” (1997-2011), for example, features a sedated girl tied to the wall with a red crochet tube. At Casa França-Brasil in 2011, the artist installed “Pelos+Rede” where a couple lay naked in a giant hammock attached to the structure of the building.

His preference for live models (not being called performance) is due to the challenge of not controlling the image.

The artist is also very interested in the role of clothing in society. For the São Paulo Biennial in 2006, the artist produced polyethylene clothing that was worn by visitors to the exhibition, very much in keeping with the theme of the exhibition “How to live together”.

Laura is one of the founding partners of A Gentil Carioca, in Rio de Janeiro. In 2011, she participated in the Lyon Biennale and the Manchester International Festival, and had an important solo exhibition at Casa-França in Rio de Janeiro. She has since exhibited in Sweden, the Netherlands, Buenos Aires and Denmark. She has recently had solo exhibitions at renowned institutions such as the Fondazione Prada, in Milan, Italy, and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, in São Paulo.
