The sculpture “Omi Titun,” created especially for Carbono Galeria, is anchored in the way Nádia Taquary interprets Yoruba ancestry and the female deities of this Pantheon, elements that also guide her artistic research in a broader sense. It refers to Oxum, the great Iabá, queen of the fresh waters who fertilizes everything. Yellow represents her metals, specifically gold and bronze. The central shape refers to the womb and relates to the imposing presence of feminine power, the driving force responsible for ordering the world. Formally, the work brings together a set of glass beaded strands, which directly alludes to the fans used in the terreiros. Supported by a steel structure covered in these many strands, the piece is composed of several rings, like wedding rings that reaffirm communion with the divine. Nádia Taquary’s proposal is to deconstruct colonial stereotypes by recognizing the leading role of black women in Afro-Atlantic cultures.
