In his frequent research into daily life and popular customs, the artist found in the figa a rich object, laden with interpretations. Present in both popular and religious contexts, the figa is an amulet full of culture and history. Whether as a symbol of protection, resistance, or good luck, it remains strongly present in the imagination and practices of popular culture.

For this project, using the figa (a hand gesture used to make a gesture of good luck) as a support, the artist inserted into it the drawing of a female face with a golden crown, conveying the image of the mother, a divine protector. The female figure, already recurrent in the artist's repertoire as a representation of strength and spirituality, unites with the symbolic meaning of the figa as an amulet against negative energies, creating a new object, a symbol of resistance.

As the artist states: "The figa, in its materiality, produced by the artisans of Juazeiro do Norte-CE, carries with it important essences of my work, such as the contrast between the rustic and the polished, origin and revision."

Biography

Derlon

Derlon

Born in 1985 in Recife (PE), Brazil | Lives and works in São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Derlon develops an artistic production strongly linked to graphic imagery, inspired by the aesthetics of popular woodcut prints. With simple and reduced strokes, he creates predominantly monochromatic works that explore the communicative power of drawing and interaction with the public. Interested in urban art from an early age, especially graffiti, he combined this experience with the influence of woodcut prints, creating his own visual language that combines mural painting and minimalist graphic references.

His exhibition career began in 2007 with the group show "Estética da Periferia" at the Aloísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art, and gained prominence when he exhibited alongside printmaker Gilvan Samico in the show "Narrativas em Madeira e Muro" at the Pernambuco State Museum in 2008. In 2011, he held his first solo exhibition at the Artur Fidalgo gallery in Rio de Janeiro, consolidating the beginning of a constant presence in the Brazilian and international art scene.

Among his solo exhibitions, highlights include “The Beauty of Time” at Galeria Amparo60, Recife, 2019; “The Reign of the Moon” at Artur Fidalgo gallery, Rio de Janeiro, 2018; “White Gold” at Artur Fidalgo gallery, Rio de Janeiro, 2014; “Memories” at Dumaresq gallery, Recife, 2013; “Kings, Queens and Commoners” at Centro Cultural Furnas Eletrobrás, Rio de Janeiro, 2012; “The New Free World” at Funarte, Recife, 2012; and “Derlon” at Artur Fidalgo gallery, Rio de Janeiro, 2011.

In group exhibitions, he participated in “Coletiva 70” at Casa70, Lisbon, 2019; “Brazilian Street Art” at the Horniman Museum, London, 2016; “Villa Ocupada” in Nantes, 2015; “Arte Core” at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, 2014; “De l'Art à l'Ourcq” in Paris, 2014; “Mix Max Brazil” at the Tropenmuseum Junior, Amsterdam, 2012; “Derlon & Seth” at the Atelier du Passe Partout, Saint Brieuc, 2011; “Ocupação Chico Science” at Itaú Cultural, São Paulo, 2010; “Da Rua: Que Pintura É Essa” at Funarte, Rio de Janeiro, 2009; “Derlon e a Incrível Metamorfose Macunamouse” at Graphos Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, 2009; “Narratives in Wood and Wall” at the Pernambuco State Museum, Recife, 2008; and “Aesthetics of the Periphery” at the Aloísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art, Recife, 2007.

Among his important achievements are large murals created in public and institutional spaces, such as the panels in the cities of Amsterdam and Lisbon in 2012, Newcastle in 2013, and the mural at the Brazilian Embassy in London in 2016. His work has also been documented in publications such as “Derlon” (Impressões de Minas, 2018) and “Plantando Poesia – Derlon convida os poetas do sertão do Pajeú” (Impressões de Minas, 2023).
