Since ancient times, humanity has adorned its body with talismans for protection and jewelry to emphasize beauty and communicate identity. By piercing architecture, Janet Vollebregt creates talismans for buildings. In this way, she personifies the building as a living entity, but with a different vibration than the human one, creating new dialogues between the human body, buildings and nature. According to the artist, if we treat buildings as living organisms, we will make more sustainable choices and create environments that nourish people and the planet.

The piercing that Vollebregt developed for Carbono is adorned with 7 small spherical crystals, which represent the 7 chakras in the human body. Crystals are a recurring element in Janet's work and, by using them, she creates a talisman that aims to harmonize both the inhabitants of the space where it is placed, as well as the environment itself.

Janet Vollebregt

b. 1969, Leiden, Netherlands | Lives and works between Brazil and the Netherlands.

Having begun her professional career in architecture, artist Janet Vollebregt works on the boundaries between the visible and the invisible, proposing forms and spaces geared towards the development of sensitive experiences. Her transdisciplinary research is based on a holistic perspective to establish harmony between individual and collective energies based on the perception of subtle energy, a kind of intermediary force between the physical and spiritual worlds. The foundations of her practice include traditional Eastern practices and knowledge, which the artist has deepened during her frequent trips to Asia and through her ongoing study of the Japanese philosophy of Jin Shin Jyutsu, as well as knowledge expressed in other doctrines such as Shintoism and Buddhism.

Janet Vollebregt's installations, interventions, sculptures and interactive objects aim to provoke the body's energetic self-awareness. The use of crystals in her compositions aims to broadly investigate the aesthetic possibilities of the material, beyond its visual aspect, investing in the expansion of the sensorial field to establish a connection with the whole. Her practice aims to articulate technical knowledge and philosophies aimed at a broad understanding of nature. One of the milestones of her research is the Refazenda project, in Alto Paraíso de Goiás, near the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park. In 2006, Vollebregt moved to the region, where she lived for a decade. There, the artist developed this, which is one of her most ambitious projects, combining nature, architecture, art and design with the aim of restoring harmony between these elements.

Recent solo exhibitions by the artist include: Esférica, at the National Museum of the Republic (MUN), in Brasília, Brazil (2022); Nurturing Space, at Marktsteeg 10, in Leiden, the Netherlands (2019); and Art.Chi.Texturas, at Galeria Espaço Aberto, in Alto Paraíso de Goiás, Brazil (2016). Her works have been part of group exhibitions such as: A Celebration of the Golden Time, at Casa Fares, in São Paulo, Brazil (2023); Curva - Ponto, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Sorocaba (MACS), in São Paulo, Brazil (2022); Imagine Intuition, at Museum De Lakenhal, in Leiden, the Netherlands (2022); Circular, at Praça Adolpho Bloch, in São Paulo, Brazil (2022); Transformation, at the Est Art Foundation, in Leiden, the Netherlands (2021).
