The works in this series are an extension of the object-paintings I have done previously, characterized as pictorial interventions in space (as in the "Jabuticabas" and "Tumbergias" series). This time, however, the relationship with space is smaller, seeking to create a “unique piece”. In addition, the series expands the use of plants and flowers to address human themes.

Each work consists of a pair of three-dimensional flowers, where each flower is fixed to the wall by a single point, at the base of the stem, supporting each other to maintain the suggested composition. If one of the flowers is removed, the other loses its balance and falls, symbolizing the interdependence between them.

The idea of "support" was the starting point for the development of the works, functioning as a metaphor for relationships. Although I do not believe in "perfect" love and relationships, I consider support essential to building relationships that are close to ideal. I see support both in the physical sense, where one body depends on the other to maintain static balance, and in the emotional sense: supporting the individualities, desires and differences of the other, being present and supporting each other.

With this concept in mind, the choice of flower was natural. I chose to work with the "Viola tricolor", popularly known as Pansy.

Biography

Mauro Piva - Carbono Galeria

Mauro Piva

b. 1977, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil | Lives and works in São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Mauro Piva holds a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from FAAP (SP), and his work ranges from drawing to painting and sculpture. Since the beginning of his career, his practice has been permeated by questions of identity/non-identity, everyday life, existentialism, affection and homage, which have marked his artistic approach. Initially focused on the representation of the human figure, Piva began to incorporate plants and flowers into his work, gradually replacing bodies. Everyday elements, especially those related to the workspace in his studio, also began to be included in his production, creating open visual narratives that invite the viewer to make personal interpretations. Although his meticulous technique may suggest hyper-realism, the artist emphasizes that he does not seek fidelity to reality, but rather plays with stereotypes, representation and recognition, proposing a visual game that makes explicit the pictorial or sculptural nature of his creations.

Since 1999, Mauro Piva has held solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. In 2024, he presented a solo exhibition at Galeria Verve, in São Paulo, displaying paintings and sculptures accompanied by a critical text by Ana Carolina Ralston. His works have also been exhibited at international fairs, such as ARCO Madrid, represented by Galeria Espacio Mínimo, and Zona Maco, by Galeria Enrique Guerrero, in Mexico City.

His work is included in important collections, such as MAM-SP, MAC-SP, MAM-RJ, MAR-RJ, MAM-BA, Museu da Gravura de Curitiba and Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz, in Brazil, and Art ar Swiss Re (Switzerland), Art C Batter Hugo Voateng (Belgium), Maxine and Stuart Frankel (USA) and JP Morgan (USA). In 2015, a monograph on his work was published by Editora Cobogó, with text by Marcos Moraes.
