"Esplanada" is a collage made from two images: the background image comes from a set of educational slides on the Geography of Brazil, in which we can already see the construction of the Esplanada dos Ministérios in Brasília; the figure that overlaps it is part of an English first aid manual from 1950. The idea came from the artist's observation of the excess of information to which we are currently subjected and our capacity to learn in different ways. Rochelle then uses collages as instruments for open conceptual and aesthetic associations, which can be interpreted in various ways. The work is part of the “Didática” series, which has been developed by the artist and for which she appropriates manuals and teaching materials from different periods.

Biography

Rochelle Costi - Carbono Galeria

Rochelle Costi

b. 1961, Caxias do Sul (RS), Brazil | d. 2020, São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Rochelle Costi is an artist who works with photography, video and installation. Her conception of photography as a form of collecting is directly reflected in her work, which is usually organized in series.

The artist mixes photographs with other forms of artistic expression and often uses them as installations. She works with different scales and confronts them in her images. She plays with points of view, causing a certain strangeness and discomfort, sensations that capture us in her images and make us reflect on them. It is impossible to see them, we must look at them.

Observation of everyday life is used as a starting point for many projects. The viewer's perception is activated by the strangeness and/or identification with the elements presented.

Re-signifying popular improvisation and informality, enhancing the perception of public/private relations through research in the urban context is present throughout his career, such as in "Quartos – São Paulo", XXIV Bienal de São Paulo, 1998; "Pratos típicas", Arte Cidade II, 1987; "Dinâmica comum", Instituto Tomie Ohtake, 2005, among others.

Highlights include exhibitions held at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, the São Paulo Cultural Center, the Museum of Image and Sound (São Paulo), the Casa da Ribeira Cultural Space, the Petrobrás Visual Arts Room (Natal), the Paço Imperial (Rio de Janeiro), the 24th and 29th São Paulo International Biennial, the 11th International Architecture Exhibition (Venice), the 1st Biennial of the End of the World (Ushuaia), the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (Berlin), the Centre de la Vieille Charité (Marseille), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), the El Museu del Barrio (New York), the Reina Sofia Art Center (Madrid), the 6th and 7th Havana Biennial, and the Fundación La Caixa (Barcelona).
