Kássia Borges is an indigenous visual artist from the Iny people of the Cerrado and a member of the MAHKU collective (Huni Kuin Artists’ Movement), featured at the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale. She uses painting and in-depth research based on the use of clay as a raw material. In “The Woman Who Brings Healing,” a totemic sculpture developed for Carbono Galeria, the visual arts professor and researcher draws on her knowledge of traditional Karajá ceramics. The animal and plant figures and geometric motifs that make up the work are inspired by the body paintings done by indigenous women of her people. The series is based on Kássia’s sculptural research called “Vovó Pajé,” which reinforces the feminine as the one who holds wisdom and healing.
