In Maria Nepomuceno’s work for Carbono, there is a play of inside and outside, of gravity and of questioning the nature of matter. Clay is widely explored in the artist’s sculptures and installations and references Brazilian handicrafts and indigenous production. Furthermore, the very shape of the clay piece and its apparent continuity – sectioned by the wall – can lead us to think of the sap that flows from the roots to the trunk and branches of the plant. A nature that seems paralyzed for a photographic instant, but that can move at any moment.

Biography

Maria Nepomuceno - Carbono Galeria

Maria Nepomuceno

b. 1976, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil | Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil.

Maria Nepomuceno's work is composed of organic shapes made with ropes, beads and threads, which create fantastic sculptures and installations. Her work is a reflection of the body's coexistence between the city and nature in Rio de Janeiro.

His sculptures evoke nature in various forms: plants, roots, sap, the female and male circulatory systems, etc. The choice of materials is made based on indigenous, Brazilian and typical references.

A very interesting object produced by the artist on numerous occasions is the hammock. According to the artist, this “brings together the central forces of my work: tension, relaxation, movement and affection.” Nepomuceno took one of his hammocks to the Huni Kuin tribe in Acre with the intention of promoting the return of the abject to its origins, and to see what people would react to seeing an object so familiar, but very different from what they produce.
