"Drifters" is based on the symbolism of Ouroboros, the serpent that swallows its own tail, reminding us of the eternal return, the beginning, the cycles of life or the greatness of infinity. In the work, the image always appears incomplete with one of the pieces in the wrong position, as if drifting in another direction, promoting a rupture imposed on the eternal return. Although the search for perfection guides us, making mistakes is part of our nature. "Drifters" seeks to make mistakes explicit as a human virtue.

The sculpture is made up of 4 polished bronze pieces, welded at the back, leaving a breathing space between each piece, making it possible to hang it on the wall or place it as a set of tiles.

There are 12 possible configurations. Although treated as multiple, each edition has a unique order, and the configuration of each one is not repeated. See the gallery for available variations.

Biography

Dora Smék e Paul Setúbal - Carbono Galeria

Dora Smék and Paul Setúbal

Dora Smék, b. 1987, Campinas (SP), Brazil; Paul Setúbal, b. 1987, Aparecida de Goiânia (GO), Brazil | They live and work in São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Dora Smék's work involves an investigation of the body in situations of opposition, movement, tension and flow. Coming from a background in dance, the artist addresses the unconscious and sexuality in sculptures, installations, photographs, videos and performances in which the body – especially the female body – reveals itself only through its fragments.

He graduated in Body Arts at PUC-SP (São Paulo, 2011) and completed a Masters in Visual Arts at Unicamp (Campinas, 2019).

Among her exhibitions, the following stand out: Opponents, in collaboration with Paul Setúbal, Central Galeria (São Paulo, 2022); and The Dance of the Headless Body, Central Galeria (São Paulo, 2021). Her group shows include: 13th Mercosul Biennial (Porto Alegre, 2022); Art on the Field, Pacaembu Stadium (São Paulo, 2020); In the Present, Life (is) Political, Central Galeria (São Paulo, 2020); Arte Londrina 8 (Londrina, 2020); Hinter dem Horizont, Reiners Contemporary Art/Sammlung Jakob (Freiburg, Germany, 2020); Bodies Across, Reiners Contemporary Art (Marbella, Spain, 2020); Women in Brazilian Art: Between Two Vertices, CCSP (São Paulo, 2019); 47. Luiz Sacilotto Contemporary Art Salon (Santo André, 2019); 13. Verbo, Galeria Vermelho (São Paulo, 2017), among others. His work is present in public collections such as the Rio Art Museum (Rio de Janeiro) and the National Museum of Fine Arts (Rio de Janeiro), among others.

Paul Setúbal explores the different aspects and strengths of the human body and its condition as a physicality in the world. Throughout his production, the importance of the presence of a work that resembles the materiality of the events and objects that surround us becomes clear. Paul's pieces reflect on the impermanence of life, the body and how this transforms and affects us as part of the world. The artist also works with symbols represented in his works through the lens of Brazilian culture and religions.
