In his work " AMERICA", Carlos Motta places a map of South America next to a map of the United States. The position in which the North American map is placed, and its disproportionate size, suggest a disregard and questioning of its importance in relation to its South American neighbors.

Carlos Motta

b. 1978, Bogotá, Colombia | Lives and works in New York, United States.

The Colombian artist works with sculpture, video and performance to address political histories, in an attempt to create contradictory narratives that acknowledge the inclusion of repressed histories, communities and identities. His work is known for its engagement with stories from the "Queer" world.

One of his most recent works is the "Nefandus Trilogy", which was first shown at the Rotterdam Film Festival and has been shown at several festivals around the world, including Toronto, Cartagena, Paris and Vienna. The trilogy discusses the sexuality of pre-Hispanic peoples.

His solo shows include "Carlos Motta: For Democracy There Must Be Love", Röda Sten Konsthall in Gothenburg in 2015; "La forma de la libertad," Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Mexico City in 2013; "Museum as Hub: Carlos Motta: We Who Feel Differently", New Museum, New York in 2012. In 2014, Carlos Motta participated in the group show "Under the Same Sun: an introduction", curated by Pablo León de la Barra at the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
