Claudio Tozzi is an artist who works on a variety of scales. He has produced paintings, engravings, objects, sculptures, panels, building facades, murals and installations. With a degree, master's and doctorate from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo, the artist has presented his works at important institutions and exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale (1976), the São Paulo Biennale (1991), the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, the Museu da Casa Brasileira and the Museu Brasileiro de Esculturas. Claudio Tozzi has also been awarded by the Salão Nacional and won the competition to create a panel for a building on Av. Angélica and a panel for the chapel on the FIEO Campus.
The artist began to produce his work in the 1960s. Inspired by facts and newspaper stories known to the general public, Claudio Tozzi works with the image of characters such as Che Guevara, the Red Light Bandit, and the astronaut. Another important source of inspiration from this period are comic books, references not only for the characters, as in "The Look" (1968) and "Occurrence 3114" (1967), but also in visual terms. In some works, the relationship is established even in the organization of the frame. This graphic language, as well as that of posters and pamphlets and Pop Art, are strong influences on the artist's compositions. It is through these characters and their impactful language that the artist speaks about important events of that time, such as the Vietnam War and the military dictatorship in Brazil. Words are also an element that he explores extensively.
In the following decade, the artist began to experiment with painting with another important characteristic of the graphic universe, especially offset printing: screens and grains. The work "Color" (1974) represents much of what the artist would discuss during that period: the construction of images through points of color and their union in our brain. In a certain sense, it transfers a mechanical graphic technique to a manual process, painting, thus exploring the possibilities of color combinations. This is a more conceptual period for the artist and at the same time one of experimentation with techniques, scales and themes. The artist also questions reality and its representation, as well as the breaking of direct visual reference.
In the following decades, we can see the development of his painting based on the characteristics mentioned above, mainly exploring single colors, but with the intention of creating reliefs and depth using distinct tones in different areas of the painting. His work moves towards an even more architectural and urban landscape construction, as we can see in the series "Landscapes and Territories".
His works do not end in themselves, they unfold. Canvases become silkscreens, which become projects for facades, murals and vice versa. Claudio Tozzi is a versatile artist who has mastered scales, which allows him to constantly migrate between them.
