"The six images that make up the Pedras Series, by Jaques Faing, explore the ambiguities of organic form. They are photographs of stones that, taken very close up, border on abstraction or suggest the contours of human bodies. This relationship between the human body and geology gives the Pedras Series a cosmopolitical dimension because it establishes, through the gaze, a vertiginous way of articulating the human scale with the scale of the Earth.

In Faing's work, there is a recurring search for a body for the images. In the Stones Series, he obtains this body by installing his photographs in small aluminum boxes that can be manipulated and assembled in different ways. There is no horizon of recomposition or recognition beneath the fragmentation of the stone into images. This is a work that focuses on the formal value of the photographic image, beyond its indexicality."

Biography

Jaques Faing - Carbono Galeria

Jacques Faing

b. 1959, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil | Lives and works between São Paulo (SP) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil.

Visual artist and photographer, Faing investigates the transposition of photography to three-dimensional media and dedicates himself to the act of photography as performance, exploring the movement of the scene, the camera and his own body in the search for an image-event. Experimenting with different media for photographs led the artist to research in the field of sculpture. The metal structures created by Faing establish dialogues with and between images, reconfiguring their meanings.

Jaques Faing has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP), the Rio Art Museum (MAR-RJ), among others. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP), the Museum of Contemporary Art of USP (MAC-USP), the Afro Brazil Museum, the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA-RJ) and the Rio Art Museum (MAR-RJ).
