The iconic and irreverent artistic collective takes on vivid astro focus / avaf explores “pandemic curation,” where the roles of curators, collectors, and art dealers multiply like vernissages in biennial seasons.

With a cheeky nod to Claire Fontaine’s neon “Foreigners Everywhere” (the theme of the current Venice Biennale), avaf shines a (literal) light on this phenomenon in which identities blur, with curators becoming “art dealers everywhere”, art dealers becoming “artists everywhere” and collectors transforming into “art advisors everywhere”.

In the midst of this parody, avaf presents five t-shirt options with humor and irony:

Biography

avaf - Carbono Galeria

avaf

n. 1968, Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Vive e trabalha em São Paulo.

assume vivid astro focus / avaf is an artist collective founded in 2001. avaf can take on different forms depending on the different projects they are involved in. avaf works in a wide range of media, including installations, painting, tapestry, neon, video, wallpaper, music, etc. They often confront deep-rooted cultural codes, gender issues and politics through an overabundance of colors and shapes.

The pseudonym is a fundamental part of his process of working “collectively”: the central aim of his projects is always the creation of a Gesamtkunstwerk (“total work of art”) where the viewer becomes one with the work of art. Being inclusive is a key part of the realization of his works - avaf uses color as a conductor of energy and a universal language, thus ensuring the participation and surrender of the viewer. Color works as a unifying force: between people and between people and the space/architecture around them. The public is always a central part of all his projects.

assume vivid astro focus will open a major installation at the Bass Museum in Miami in December 2024, concurrent with a solo exhibition at the Fredric Snitzer gallery in the same city. avaf has been the subject of exhibitions and public art projects in galleries and museums in Brazil and abroad, including: Bass Museum, Miami, USA (2024); MASP, São Paulo, Brazil (2024); Galería Malborough, Madrid, Spain (2024); Art Dubai, Dubai (2024); Dortmunder Kunstverein, Dortmund, Germany (2024); Casa Triângulo, São Paulo, Brazil (2023); Sesc Avenida Paulista (2023); LAMB Gallery, London, UK (2022); Thailand Biennale, Korat, Thailand (2021); Tibor de Nagy Gallery, New York, USA (2021); Lanterna Mágica, São Paulo, Brazil (2021); MUBE (Brazilian Museum of Sculpture and Ecology), São Paulo, Brazil (2020); among others.

avaf was one of the four finalists for the 2018 Pipa Prize.
