The "Ocaso" edition, together with the "Aurora" edition, carry Luiz Hermano's idea of challenging geometry by giving it movement.
This type of work originated from his "moving cubes" series, where geometry is articulated, allowing for infinite forms of assembly.
Biography
Luiz Hermano
Luiz Hermano Façanha Farias studied philosophy in Fortaleza in the early 1970s and has always been drawing. At first, without access to professional paints, he painted with coffee. In 1979, he attended engraving classes at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, he moved to São Paulo and, at the invitation of Pietro Maria Bardi, held the exhibition “Desenhos” (Drawings) at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand. In 1980, he published an album of engravings entitled “O Universo” (The Universe). In 1984, upon receiving the Chandon Prize, he traveled to Paris, where he held a solo exhibition at the Galeria Debret. He participated in the 5th Seoul International Biennial (1983) and the
2nd Pan-American Biennial of Havana (1986). In the 1980s, he devoted himself mainly to painting.
In the 1990s, he developed three-dimensional works using a variety of materials, such as natural gourds, copper wires, wire, electronic capacitors, bronze alloys, aluminum, acrylic pieces and various types of industrialized pieces, displaced from everyday life. In 1987, he exhibited paintings at the 19th São Paulo International Biennial and sculptures at the 21st edition of the event, in 1991. In 2005, he participated in the exhibition “Discover Brazil”, at the Ludwig Museum, Koblenz, Germany. In 2008, he held the exhibition “Templo do Corpo”, at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, and on this occasion the book “Luiz Hermano” was published.
The monumentality of Luiz Hermano's work is present in several public spaces. In São Paulo, in the gardens of the Museum of Contemporary Art of USP, University City; in the subway station República, in the gardens of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo; and in Recife, Pernambuco, the work Mandacaru, measuring 7 meters, is on display at the Cais do Sertão Museum.
The artist divides his time between the studio and the world, as Katia Canton writes: “Travels are ways of claiming territories, consecrating the artist an increasingly dense reservoir of world experiences. Landscapes, temples, stories of people and things seen along the way, everything accumulates in the thickness of a new work.”
