This is a work that comes out of painting and returns to it, in a continuous theme. Creating these entanglements that are constructed by removing the material and that, later, return to it to create a non-coded but real form, growing and passing through the perception of how to be in the world, of how to insert oneself in space.

The " Stacked Up" series comes from the result of this look at the relationship between geometric shapes and organic shapes, making them become a single shape within space. It comes from the need to understand how a shape is constructed using a material that is not fluid, that requires brute force, always accompanied by many drawbacks: the difficulty of doing it, the lack of immediacy, the perception of the need for the passing of time, a time that is not ours.

Biography

Gabriela Machado - Carbono Galeria

Gabriela Machado

b. 1960, Joinville (SC), Brazil | Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil.

An architect by training, before dedicating herself entirely to the visual arts, she participated in restoration work at the Roberto Marinho Foundation. From the 1990s onwards, combining her extensive studies in engraving, painting, drawing and art theory with her great admiration for artists such as Giorgio Morandi and Mira Schendel, Gabriela created large-scale engravings and drawings. These are based on everyday objects, avoiding the traditional perspective point of view.

He has received awards from FUNARTE, an Honorable Mention from the University of Rio de Janeiro, among others. His works are in museums and private collections in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Santa Catarina and Phoenix, United States.

Using large panels placed on the floor and painted with quick movements using India ink, the artist shows her physical and emotional relationship with her work in two works donated to the Pampulha Museum in 2009, exhibited in the group show Coisário Cassino Museu. In 2012, she occupied the enormous rooms of the Paço Imperial with her drawings and paintings in the exhibition "Rever". The following year, with an exhibition of the same name, she presented her sculptures for the first time at Galeria 3+1, in Lisbon. She also presented a video, in which images of the artist's daily life bring to light her poetic origins.

In 2014, Gabriela held the exhibition "Para o pequeno lago verde" (For the Little Green Lake) at the Museu do Açude in Rio de Janeiro, where she presented three sculptures inside the museum's lake. That same year, the artist launched an artist's book with photos taken for Instagram at Paris Photo. "Gabriela's work has a chromatic aspect that caught my attention. "Rever" is an author's book, which does not carry the vices of an experienced photographer and which is precisely structured within the book format," says Claudia Jaguaribe, the book's editor.
