Originally conceived as a painting, dated 1978, "LESSON IN SEMIOTICS" is a work that bears Almandrade's artistic and poetic identity. The economical use of colors, shapes and words based on a clever pun with multiple meanings are recurring characteristics in his works. In "LESSON IN SEMIOTICS", the artist semantically uses the two parts of the word, whose union is the essential basis for poetic ruptures. The simultaneous visual and sound concerns of the signifier, added to the verbal, of the signified, are directly related to the expanded poetry movements, such as Brazilian concrete poetry and its national developments in neoconcrete poetry and the process poem.

Almandrade

b. 1953, São Felipe (BA), Brazil | Lives and works in Salvador (BA), Brazil.

Visual artist, architect, master in urban design, poet, and professor of art theory at the art workshops of the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia and Palacete das Artes. He participated in several group exhibitions, including: XII, XIII and XVI São Paulo Biennial; "In Search of Essence" - special exhibition of the XIX São Paulo Biennial; IV National Salon; Universe of Football (MAM/Rio); National Fair (São Paulo); II São Paulo Salon, I International Exhibition of Ephemeral Sculpture (Fortaleza); I Bahia Salon; II National Salon; Honorable Mention at the I Student Salon in 1972. He was part of group exhibitions of visual poems, multimedia, and installation projects in Brazil and abroad.

He has held approximately thirty solo exhibitions in various states. His works are in several private and public collections, including: Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, National Museum of Fine Arts (Rio de Janeiro), City Museum (Salvador) and Municipal Art Gallery of São Paulo, Afro Museum (São Paulo), Museum of Art of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Golden Art, Aloísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art (Recife), Museum of Contemporary Art of Rio Grande do Sul, Museum of Contemporary Art of Feira de Santana (Bahia), University Center for Culture and Art of Feira de Santana (Bahia), ACBEU Gallery of Salvador, Abraham Palatnik Museum of Art (Natal), Museum of Art of Rio de Janeiro, National Museum (Brasília).
