In the series "Palma Filia", I continue a long research project that dates back to the project "Quando Eu Vi" (When I Saw It) (2008), about the environment. Now, the trunks are mixed with human hands, abstracting from formal records to propose a more subjective and profound experience, referring to the care we must take with the preservation of nature. The trunks of imperial palms present in this series invariably come from the specimen originally planted in the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, in 1809 and called Palma Mater. Its descendants, symbolically named Palma Filia, give the title to the work.

Biography

Claudia Jaguaribe - Carbono Galeria

Claudia Jaguaribe

b. 1955, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil | Lives and works between Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Claudia Jaguaribe has a degree in art history, visual arts and photography from Boston University, USA. Her work focuses on urban landscapes, the environment, and mainly issues related to the representation of reality as a conceptual record.

By mixing reality and subjectivity, he stimulates our perception of what we are seeing, creating layers of understanding and narratives. The materiality of his works questions the very nature of photography. He expands the traditional formats of photography, transforms images into photo-sculptures, and integrates and uses video and the internet in his installations.

His work has been linked to editorial research since the beginning. Many of his series find their final expression in book format. He has published 20 books and is recognized for the unique integration of photography and graphic design. In 2013, he co-founded the photobook publisher Editora Madalena.

His works are in several Brazilian and international museums and collections, such as: MAM – SP, Inhotim, Itaú Cultural, Instituto Moreira Salles, Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Maison Européene de la Photographie (Paris), Instituto Ítalo Latino Americano (Rome), Hangar Art Center, among others.
