“To be able to speak. To be able to love.
A new orientation of desire, a new power to love. For fear that this idea will be smoothed over and softened as soon as it is uttered, I will even write deliberately: a new capacity to enjoy.” Paul Ricoeur

Is our desire free or constrained? This neon sign is based on the text “Theory of Interpretation” by philosopher Paul Ricoeur to reflect on the possibility of “enjoying our own fantasies without scruples or shame.” Here, the phrases “to be able to speak” and “to be able to love” appear reproduced in red neon. One phrase is a reflection of the other. The brightness of the sign, however, is partially obscured, since its letters are painted with matte paint.

The work was developed for the second edition of the Collector's Edition project, a collaboration between collector Georgiana Rothier and the artist.
