Nature and technology. The connection between these two universes guides Leandro Lima’s artistic production and also the creation of “Sondagem”, a series created especially for Carbono Galeria. The work represents the development of human intelligence manifested through an apparition in the natural environment. Laser light is a recurring phenomenon of technological development in quantum physics since the 1960s, also responsible for the creation of the transistor, which gave rise to the computer revolution. The action not only appears as a photographic record, but also happens in front of the observer. The specific characteristics of this luminous manifestation are revealed by the laser emitter itself, which pulses a linear beam of light, expanding the photographic cutout. This illumination travels vertically through the space as a measuring instrument and a union between the environment and the human.

Biography

Leandro Lima - Carbono Galeria

Leandro Lima

b. 1976, São Paulo (SP), Brazil | Lives and works in São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Leandro Lima is an artist who, since the late 1990s, has explored the use of technological devices, elements of nature, urban spaces and artistic institutions to question the observer's experience of the environment and everyday activities.

Leandro has participated in several notable exhibitions, including: “Chão da Praça” at the Pinacoteca Contemporânea (2023); “Bienal do Mercosul” at Cais Embarcadero, in Porto Alegre (2022); “Yano-a” at Galeria Claudia Andujar, Instituto Inhotim, in Brumadinho (2019 - on permanent display); “Constructions and Geometries” at the Brazilian Sculpture Museum (MUBE), in São Paulo (2019); “Amazônia. The Shaman and the Mind of the Forest” at the Nantes History Museum, in France (2019); “Público Confuso e Privado” at the Third Beijing Photography Biennale, in China (2018); and the Guangzhou Image Triennial, at the Guangdong Museum of Art, in China (2017).

His work is present in important collections, such as the SER iK Mouseion (Tulum, Mexico); the ZKM Center for Art and Media (Karlsruhe, Germany); the CIFO Art Foundation Collection (Miami, USA); the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris, France; the Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz (Ribeirão Preto, Brazil); the Instituto Itaú Cultural (São Paulo, Brazil); and the Collection of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil).

In addition to his individual work, Leandro Lima collaborated with Gisela Motta under the Motta&Lima label, establishing significant production partnerships.

As Paulo Miyada observed in "Counting Electric Sheep": "Of the many tasks that art has undertaken throughout the history of humanity, one of the most persistent has been the creation of representations of parts of the world. Today, when not all art represents something and not everything that represents something is art, a work like Motta&Lima's offers elaborate emulations of reality, whether with the most advanced or the simplest of technologies. The fundamental thing for artists is not to create replicas or simulations identical to reality, but to produce concrete systems that function in a manner equivalent to the phenomena that interest them."
