José Damasceno develops a line of reasoning that has been studied and exposed throughout his career in this piece: spatial circumstances from a perspective that causes us to feel strange. The artist explores displacement in space using an object present in conventional still life images: the tray in its most traditional form.

The strangeness of this object, which is so familiar to us, is due to the combination of the utensils with the tray itself, resulting in spaces with an infinite background, creating an optical illusion. The lack of support makes us question what these objects could have inside them, opening up infinite possibilities, counting on the imagination of the viewer.

The artist presents us with an analogy: a subject that has been studied for centuries, such as still life, can have an “infinite” vision, and be interpreted from different points of view and at different times.

José Damasceno

b. 1968, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil | Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil.

José Damasceno is a sculptor who has been developing his works since the early 1990s. The artist's works follow an investigative development of the relationships between space and thought, where intriguing situations invite the viewer to observe and think about what they see.

"Method for Starting and Moving" is the title of his first solo exhibition in 1993, at the Sérgio Porto gallery, Rio de Janeiro. The work is part of the collection of the Inhotim Institute. In this installation, the artist uses industrial carpet as the only material and, from this, establishes a series of questions of the utmost importance in the artist's career.

In the following decade, his work achieved great international notoriety. In 2005, for the Venice Biennale, the artist developed "Durante o caminho vertical" (During the vertical path), a piece first presented in Madrid in 2001. The installation, composed of stacks of printed paper cut into the shape of a footprint, describes a walk where columns arranged throughout the exhibition space each correspond to a left, right, and so on, configuring a final form through circumambulation. At the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Villa delle Rose in Bologna, Italy, in the exhibition "Alla ricerca dell'identità" (Alla ricerca dell'identità), in 2001, Damasceno exhibited "Trilha sonora" (Soundtrack) for the first time, a work consisting only of hammers and nails. Arranged sequentially, they produce something between a sound graphic and the suggestion of a landscape. The following year, this work was presented at the São Paulo Biennale.

In addition to having received several awards throughout his career, he participated in the 51st and 52nd editions of the Venice Biennale, the 25th São Paulo Biennale, the 15th Sydney Biennale and the 4th Mercosul Biennale. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art – MoMA and the Cisneros Fontanal Art Foundation (both in the USA); Daros Foundation (Switzerland); Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Barcelona – MACBA (Spain); Instituto Inhotim; Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo; among other important public and private collections.
