According to Plato, human beings were originally androgynous and happy. However, the gods divided them in two. Separated from their halves, love became a desire, a will to complete oneself. Hence the human nature for completeness. In The Symposium, Plato illustrates this idea when discussing the complementary tesserae in Aristophanes' commentaries. The work Tessera #09, by Artur Lescher, is a construction in polyester resin that discusses Plato's original idea about soul mates. The idea of a romantic reunion is expanded by the possible complement of the encounter in reality.
"The empty spaces of each piece, split at its origin, are compatible with all sorts of geometries present in our homes built at right angles. Therefore, they can be complemented, for example, in a meeting of walls, and in this way achieve a new hybrid identity. This is how they are realized.”
Arthur Lescher
