Moving from painting with thick material to expanded painting with interventions on canvases, Fabio Miguez creates three-dimensional fields with different colors and materials that move in his works, making the viewer interact with the work and create different compositions.

In " Três Eclipses " , words from poems by João Cabral de Melo Neto from Pernambuco are placed on movable acrylic sheets that, in a specific position, form an eclipse. The sheets are joined with wood painted in different colors, which are sometimes fixed, sometimes movable.

The wooden box has the same language as the suitcases produced by the artist during his career. These suitcases can be called valises, referring to the work of Marcel Duchamp.

Fabio Miguez

b. 1962, São Paulo (SP), Brazil | Lives and works in São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

Fábio Marques Miguez began his architecture studies at the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo (FAU/USP) in 1980. Over the next two years, he studied metal engraving with artist Sérgio Fingermann. Between 1983 and 1985, he was a member of the Casa 7 studio, together with Carlito Carvalhosa, Nuno Ramos, Paulo Monteiro and Rodrigo Andrade. Initially, his work was done in large formats with broad brushstrokes, strong colors and expressive texture. From the mid-1990s onwards, Fabio began to produce abstract canvases filled with pictorial matter, tending towards monochromatic gray, brown or white. At the same time, the artist dedicated himself to photography.

In the opinion of art historian Rodrigo Naves, Miguez's production reveals an affinity with that of the Dutch artist Bram van Velde, “with his Matisse-like areas of color and misshapen, threatening structure”, in addition to the dialogue with works by Jorge Guinle.

From 2001 onwards, Fabio began to present geometric shapes alongside his paintings. These shapes appear to float on a plane above that of the chromatic spots, giving a sense of spatiality and exploring the pictorial space. In some works, he used wooden elements glued to the frames, which reinforced the idea of the solidity of the geometric elements, as opposed to areas where the paints are more fluid and the texture is thinner and more transparent.

In recent years, Miguez has been developing works with three-dimensional formulations, such as the installation "Onde" (Where), from 2006; the object "Ping pong" (Ping pong), from 2008; and the series "Valises" (Valises), produced since 2007, which expand his field of research — painting. His background in architecture brings a constructivist influence, which is combined with investigations into scale, matter and figuration. Miguez works with modular forms, subjecting them to combinatorial reasoning, repeating them and varying their position while inverting and mirroring them. In his works, the spatial logic, which was previously resolved in the plane and depth of the painting, expands in the mind of the person contemplating these paintings, in the irresistible thought about possible developments.

In his work, nothing is there by chance. The design, the shape, the color, the text, the title, everything is precise and everything contains sparks of reading and reflection for the viewer.

Fabio Miguez participated in the São Paulo International Biennial in 1985 and 1989; the 2nd Havana Biennial in 1986; the 3rd Cuenca International Painting Biennial in Ecuador in 1991; and the 5th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre in 2005. In addition to retrospective exhibitions such as the 20th Century Brazil Biennial in 1994 and the 30x Biennial in 2013, both promoted by the São Paulo Biennial Foundation. Fabio has had solo exhibitions such as: "Zero Landscape", at the Maria Antonia University Center, in 2012; "Themes and Variations", at the Tomie Ohtake Institute, in 2008 and at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in 2003, accompanied by the publication of a book about his work; among others. Recently, he has had some solo exhibitions: "Shortcuts", in 2016, at Galeria Nara Roesler in Rio de Janeiro; "Fragments of the Real (Shortcuts)", at Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz, Ribeirão Preto and at Galeria Nara Roesler, São Paulo, in 2018.
