The sculpture "Friendship" was created by the artist during the period of social isolation generated by Covid-19.

The work consists of a corten steel pendulum that is supported by two bases and if supported by only one of the bases, it falls.

The artist reflects on the importance of affection and friendship, as the vectors behind the creation of this work. Drawing a parallel between the importance of complicity and harmony between the two bases, which together hold the pendulum better, and two people who, by helping each other, face life better.

Raul Mourão

b. 1967, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil | Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil and New York, USA.

Sculptures, objects, photographs, drawings, videos, engravings and paintings are part of Raul Mourão's artistic vocabulary. The city and urban life set the tone for some of the artist's works, while in others, humor and political commentary become the main theme. Thus, form joins concept to materialize works in which the concrete influence is most visible in the "Grades e Balanços" series.

Inspired by the landscape of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Raul Mourão combines fragments of urban construction with abstract forms to create his mobile sculptures, drawings, videos and performances. Using meticulous, seemingly architectural drawings as a starting point, he creates abstract and minimalist sculptures and assemblages that emphasize the tension between the raw chaos of the city and its controlled geometry, incorporating metal fences, security systems and objects reminiscent of street carts and market stalls into his library of references. Since 2010, the artist has worked with kinetic sculptures composed of simple geometric forms and structural reductions of modular shapes. In many ways, his new production combines the implicit violence of his previous works with a formalist concern for the balance of forms.

He graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ in 1990 and studied art at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage - EAV. Among the exhibitions he has participated in in recent years are: "Alegria - A natureza-morta nas Coleçãos MAM Rio", Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 2019; "Fora/Dentro", Museum of the Republic, Rio de Janeiro, 2018; "In my Opinion", Plutschow Gallery, Zurich (Switzerland), 2017; "Você está aqui", Museu Brasileiro de Escultura e Ecologia - MuBE, São Paulo, 2016; "Please Touch", The Bronx Museum of Arts, New York (USA), 2015; "O shelter e o terra", MAR - Museu de Arte do Rio, Rio de Janeiro, 2013; "Cinetics and constructives", Carbono Galeria, São Paulo, 2013; "From the margin to the edge", Sommerset House, London (England), 2012; "Animal Traction", Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro - MAM Rio, 2012.

The artist is part of the collections of Itaú Cultural, MAC – Niterói, Museu de Arte do Rio, Coleção Gilberto Chateaubriand, ASU Art Museum and Brazil Golden Art. He participated in the 5th Biennial of São Tomé and Príncipe, the 3rd Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre and has had solo exhibitions in Brazil and Portugal.
