Biography

Raul Mourão - Carbono Galeria

Raul Mourão

b. 1967, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil | Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil and New York, USA.

Raul Mourão is one of the leading figures of the generation of artists who marked the Rio de Janeiro art scene in the 1990s. Recognized for his multimedia production, which encompasses sculptures, installations, videos, photographs, paintings, drawings, prints, and performances, Mourão develops works based on observations of urban daily life, especially in Rio de Janeiro, combining social criticism, humor, and formal experimentation.

His work investigates the visual codes of the city and reinterprets elements such as railings, fences, market stalls, and security systems. Since his first photographic records of Rio de Janeiro's railings in 1989, which unfolded into sculptures and installations from the 2000s onwards, his research has evolved into interactive kinetic works composed of modular geometric forms and mobile structures. In these works, the artist connects urban violence with the search for formal balance.

Among her most recent solo exhibitions are "Cage Head" at the Americas Society in New York, 2023; "Lugar Geométrico" at Casa França-Brasil in Rio de Janeiro, 2023; "Empty Head" at Nara Roesler in New York, 2021; "Fora/Dentro" at the Museu da República in Rio de Janeiro, 2018; and "Você está aqui" at MuBE in São Paulo, 2016. She has participated in group exhibitions such as "Utopias e distopias" at MAM-BA, 2022; "Modos de ver o Brasil: Itaú Cultural 30 anos" at Oca, 2017; and the Vancouver Biennale between 2014 and 2016.

His works are part of the collections of institutions such as ASU Art Museum, Instituto Itaú Cultural, MAC Niterói, Museu de Arte do Rio, and MAM Rio. Raul Mourão lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
